Turmeric is probably best known for its use as an anti-inflammatory supplement in horses, making it popular for use with horses and ponies suffering from arthritis and other conditions relating to lameness. It reduces inflammation and pain as the curcumin reduces the inflammatory pathways in the body through its ability to inhibit the cyclooxygenase enzyme 2 (COX-2), whilst maintaining COX-1 enzymatic function.
White willow has been used for the relief of chronic illnesses like rheumatism, arthritis and sciatica dating back to the Middle Ages. This herb helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. One major benefit of white willow is that it has little or no affect on the horse or ponies gastro intestinal tract which is a common negative side-effect of pain remedies like Aspirin.
Boswellia has been shown to inhibit the enzymes which are responsible for inflammation. Glycos-amino-glycans are essential nutrients within joints. Boswellia has been shown to reduce GAG degradation due to age or arthritic conditions, so it could support joint health, as well as providing anti-inflammatory benefits.
Meadowsweet can be especially helpful for the older horse or pony who suffers from arthritis. The historic use of meadowsweet confirms that it is an effective anti-inflammatory and pain reliever without causing the wide range of digestive problems associated with aspirin.
Ginger Its most valuable effect is its ability to reduce inflammation by neutralizing free radicals which contribute to inflammation. Its antiseptic properties also make it beneficial for gastrointestinal infections. For the older, arthritic horse ginger has a warming effect and is a useful maintenance herb. It stimulates, circulates and helps blood flow.
A PainSolution
Over the course of their lives, horse and Ponies will experience pain for a variety of reasons and with differing levels of intensity. As much as we’d like to prevent our horse or pony suffering altogether, experiencing pain it is a crucial part of their developmental well-being. Just like with humans, pain acts as a biological alert mechanism to let the horse or pony know when something is wrong.
Without this important mechanism, horses and ponies would likely over-strain themselves more frequently or ignore serious injuries. That being said, there’s no reason any living being should suffer through intense pain in the long-term, especially when relief-providing remedies are so naturally abundant.
Some common sources of chronic and/or intermittent pain for horses and ponies can include soft tissue injuries due to overexertion, osteoarthritis and other joint-related diseases. There’s a lot of debate about how to best manage pain when treating horses or ponies. Some owners rely on over-the-counter medications prescribed by equine health professionals (vets) while others prefer natural remedies such as herbs. Depending on the source and intensity of your horse or ponies pain, either option could provide adequate relief and assist with treatment and recovery.
